More About Ewoud

Introduction

As a marketer you’re eager to make an impact. You’re trying to do your best work, but you keep getting interrupted all day long. At 6 pm you feel like you haven't made enough progress on that marketing campaign and end the day feeling deflated and defeated by your workload.

The only solution you see is to get into the office early and leave late at night, basically creating an additional working day outside of the regular office hours. This is not the solution. It will burn you out and you’re not solving the root cause:

A sequence of small distractions is what causes chaotic days where you feel stressed and overwhelmed.

This guide will help you take back control by reducing distractions and giving you more focus so you can get more done in a day. I’ll teach you how to design your (digital) workspace to have notifications work for you, instead of distracting you like a slot machine.

I also used to be distracted easily, but with the small changes described in this guide, I was able to break the habit.

Over the past decade, I’ve collaborated with many people. Watching over their shoulders (digitally or physically), the number of notifications surprises me. No wonder you can’t concentrate with ‘breaking news’, email, WhatsApp and Slack notifications popping up every other second.

The nasty truth is that most of these distractions are by design. Smartphones and apps are slot machines designed to grab your attention and get you addicted.

A sequence of small distractions is what causes chaotic days where you feel stressed and overwhelmed.

At 6 pm you feel like you haven't accomplished enough and end the day feeling deflated and defeated by your workload.

The first step to taking back control is reducing time-wasting and distraction: look for what’s not important and not urgent. Stop doing those things to create more time for important work, to learn new skills, and to make an impact. If you are not able to harness this skill you won’t progress in your career and, more importantly, you’ll probably burn out.

In this guide, I’ll give you practical tips on how to design your (digital) workspace to have notifications work for you, instead of distracting you like a slot machine.

When you implement these tips, you'll get more done in a day/week and you'll feel more relaxed. I also used to be distracted easily, but with these small changes, I was able to break the habit.

Implementing these tips is a journey. You should learn what works for you and what doesn't. If you make a mistake, don’t be too hard on yourself.
